Overcoming challenges was no mystery for some teams

Today the Greenbelt was stormed by groups of competitors racing to the
finish line in the "inaugural High Rock 10k Adventure Challenge" in memory
of P.O. John Kelly.
The event started with the National Anthem sung by P.O. Tony Silva and was
complemented by the NYPD Honor Guard. Also on hand were the Emerald Society
Pipes and Drums and NYPD SCUBA Team, NYPD Mounted Unit, and NYPD K-9 Unit.
This event was designed to pay tribute to P.O. John Kelly who gave the
ultimate sacrifice as well as Sgt. Doreen Scrimenti an avid runner on Staten
Island.
"This run is slightly different than your usual 5k road race" states race
director Christopher Ballou. Competitors not only had challenges on the race
course but also before the race even began, over ten teams had to use
substitute runners to replace injured ones. That's the first step in
teamwork, getting both members to the start line uninjured. While race
director Chris Ballou logged in his own trail runs through the Greenbelt he
often saw other competitors training for this race. "They often asked me if
I was on the course or what the mystery events were, I never even gave a
hint", stated Ballou.

Both island residents and racers from as far away as Texas and California
reviewed their battle plan to overcome five unknown mystery events that were
spread out throughout the course. The first challenge was the only one told
to competitors just before the start of the race. Competitors were told to
run down the road inside the campground to the first mystery event dubbed
"team tie". Teams must tie a piece of string given to them at registration
around a rope tied between two trees. "It sounded pretty simple, but they
didn't know the mystery rope was suspended over nine and a half feet in the
air, that set the mood for the entire race" stated Assistant race director
Bob Harris.

During the entire race teammates must never split up and must cross the
finish together.  If a team fails any mystery event they must run a penalty
run which usually will take them an extra minute or two.

Only three teams had received medical treatment for minor injures.
Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians on mountain bikes arrived
quickly on scene to render medical aid.

MYSTERY EVENTS AT A GLANCE

Team Tie challenge- tie a small piece of string around a rope suspended over
nine feet in the air.

Carry or drag challenge- teams must carry of drags their partner over one
hundred meters uphill. Only one competitor is allowed to walk at a time.

Pasta for 2 challenge- both members of every team are given one piece of dry
pasta, they both must run over 3/4 of a mile to the check station. During
their trip they will gain over two hundred vertical feet and jump over a
four-foot stream. When they complete their grueling climb up the backside of
Moses Mountain race official check to see if either competitor's pasta
broke. If it did they are directed to another penalty climb.

Ring and run- Teams must run over one mile while both hold on to a small
plastic ring, if the ring breaks of either members lets go, they fail.

Pole of Punishment- Teams must take the same ring from the ring and run and
place it over this nine-foot pole. If either member touches they pole they
will be directed on an extremely difficult penalty run.

Entrants ran over 6.5 miles and overcame a whopping 1100-foot accumulated
altitude gain. "Nothing humbles a racer faster than elevation gain", stated
Ballou as he laughed. This year's event received over 275 applications for
only 100 team slots. Race officials will conduct an environmental survey
followed by a detailed clean up the day after the race. If the impact on the
environment is minimal we will look into applying for extra teams for next
year.
