What's Up?
by Ernie Beach

Well Bob has given the reigns of the Staten Island Athletic Club to me. In the coming months I hope to insure that the spirit of the club is kept alive and well. This can only be done with the input and the assistance of all of the club members. This can also be done with the help of the other clubs as well. I realize that Staten Island is a great place to run but logistically it presents a problem to the populations of the other boroughs and New Jersey as well. I believe the ridiculous tolls charged to enter Staten Island makes running here prohibitive. There are races run all over New Jersey weekly and also Long Island. Why pay what just about equals another entry fee to cross a bridge? We should discuss how to attract more runners to our races. We also need to have more races.

Also, how about some dual races between the current clubs on Staten Island. No stacked teams either. Let's try to even it up. Have some points, make it a series. When the weather gets nice maybe we can have a track meet monthly or more often. Again, we can stagger or have teams set up so everyone has a fair chance. Losers can buy the pizza. The beer never presents a problem.

Let's make sure we all remember who were killed in September. Carry their memories with us everyday. Make their families proud that we were their friends. Let's make each other better.

Having an Indoor running facility is important to Staten Island. Let's give Bob a hand if we can. Find out what kind of help is needed.

Talk to you soon,

Ernie Beach
